AI Flagship Initiative

In 2024, LIST launched the AI Flagship Initiative, a new strategic move to solidify Luxembourg’s position as a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) research, development and innovation. This comprehensive effort focuses on building a robust, trustworthy and ethical AI ecosystem that aligns with Luxembourg’s national and European goals. The initiative targets applied AI in strategic sectors such as financial services, healthcare and the green economy. Key research areas include trustworthy AI, ethical data management, AI accessibility, open-source AI and frugal AI. The initiative makes the most of LIST’s existing AI infrastructure, including Citcom.ai and the AI Sandbox, to drive talent development, research and regulatory compliance.

Putting AI bias to the test in new sandbox initiative

LIST launched a technical sandbox and the world’s first ethical bias leaderboard for AI, assessing many large language models, based on their rapid evolution, across seven types of social bias. Designed for transparency and community input, the platform helps identify discriminatory patterns and promote responsible AI use. While it is not the EU AI Act regulatory sandbox, LIST’s initiative supports compliance and fairness in AI development. This work was partially funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) via the PEARL programme and the Spanish government.

The European Union AI Act emphasizes the importance of inclusive development and equal access to AI technologies while mitigating discriminatory impacts and biases. Our AI sandbox aligns closely with these objectives, providing a platform for testing and refining AI systems within a compliance-centric framework.

The architecture of the leaderboard is designed to offer transparency and facilitate user engagement. Users can access detailed information about the biases and examples of passed and failed tests and can even contribute to the platform by suggesting new models or tests.
